1. Ernie Banks 500th Home Run Call
This classic radio call from Jack Brickhouse captures the excitement and
significance of Ernie Banks becoming a member of the elite 500 Home Run Club.
Jack and Ernie were close friends, and Jack later said he was glad to be able to
announce the call for Ernie. Jack was the Cubs broadcaster from 1940 to 1981, a
length of service that can be said of very few broadcasters. Unfortunately, he
missed the 1945 World Series, the one year during his tenure the Cubs went to
the World Series, because he was overseas serving in the United States Marines
Corps for World War II. Jack is famous for his energetic style of announcing
games, and his signature catch phrase - “Hey, Hey!” -- which can be heard in
this clip and also adorns the foul poles at Wrigley Field. Jack Brickhouse
entered the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1983 and is also a member of 13 other Halls
of Fame.
